Threats of IT

Threats of IT

Since Web2.0 (1999) the internet has been used for many way and has introduced many threats, these range from security to health threats. There are 4 main types of threats that can hack your computer and get your details (ranging from your social network password, to your bank details).

Virus
Viruses self propagate (reproduce) to infect other computers, it is a type of Malware that can be linked with other types of Malware (e.g. Trojans sending themselves to your friends, or other computers via a LAN).

Malware
Malware stands for Malicious Software, there are different forms of Malware, they mainly are embedded in software installed or in images (which is really an executable file) and fetch your personal information (passwords and account information) or take up hard drive space & CPU for illegal activity's.

Also, Norton Antivirus, a piece of Software you get a free trail for can be considered a type of Malware, after the 1,3 or 6 month trail they will send notifications on a regular basis to get you to upgrade to a Premium account (which you have to pay for). It would come under the definition of Malware because: It's free (to begin with) then it keeps sending you notifications on a regular basis.

Phishing
Phishes look like they are from a official, but aren't, they hack your information easily because you give them your information, they normally use Spoof sites to Phish.

Spam
It is one threat that nearly everyone is aware of, it is unwanted emails, that will offer you free services, also they may types of Malware.

Health
Also since the introduction of IT it has introduced many health issues, these range from; neck, eye, hand, and generally over time effects. The way you sit when using a computer might not be good for you health, leaning forward and bending your neck, and sitting close will effect your vision can all effect your health. Then there's RSI (repetitive strain injury) which is a pain when you do an activity repetitively without rest, it might not have a long term effect but it still effects your health.

There are also people who are Electrosensitive, this is when Wi-Fi and cellular signals (which is basically radiation) causes a range of symptoms; headaches, tinnitus, chest pains, difficulty sleeping, loss of concentration, effecting memory, change in behavior and a lot more.

Ensure safety and security

First of all do never give your password to anyone, even if they do sound legitimate, also do not disclose any personal information out to the public (for example where you live), since when you post it, it is public and anyone could see it.

Some companies/sites create cookies, these can track were you've been and target you with adds, although this is not really a security risk it is worth mentioning. To remove these you can simply go into your browsers settings and delete them (on Chrome go to: Settings, Show advanced settings..., Privacy, Clear browser data, Delete cookies and other site and plug-in data, then clear).

The best thing to do is; install an antivirus (although windows comes with antivirus pre-installed), check everything sent to you (thought the antivirus, and with the aid of a Firewall), when using public Wi-Fi do not do anything private (entering passwords), when sending private data (bank account details) make sure it has HTTPS (or a padlock next to the address) and check the address of the site you are visiting (to make sure it's legitimate, and not a Phish).

As it comes to separate private blogs from public blogs, there are setting to protect security and privacy, for example if you go to Bloggers settings you will see this:

You can select who can post to your blog, and who can view your posts.

Blogs – What’s good about them?

Blogs became popular in 1999 due to company's developing blogging tools, one of the first was Open Diary which was launched in October 1998. One of the most popular blogging sites, which i'm using now (Blogger) was actually launched by Pyra Labs (co-founded by Meg Hourihan & Evan Williams) in August 1999 then bought by Google in February 2003.

They are used for many reasons and by different people, there's mainly: Leisure (used by everyday people as a hobby, as a diary or to update friends on news), Journalism (to broadcast news), Politics (to connect with the voters more without having to go from door to door), Feedback (used by company's to get feedback) and Commercial (to advertise something).

The main point should be what's good about them (the title), but it really depends on who, and what, it's used for. like I shown in the last paragraph it is used for many reasons, but there is more types of people who use blogs (malicious people and innocent people, with wider categories).

Generally I would say everything about blogs are good, the freedom of the templates (also I can/have edited the HTML), ease of use, and most of the time how there used. But it's not what's good about them, it's how (and what) people use them, they could be used illegally in many way, like: selling drugs, adult material, abuse (verbal & videos of physical), modified software (viruses or cracked software, like Photoshop, usely shared on Torrent sites), and various other ways.

The social impacts of the use of IT

Since Personal Computers were created in the 1980s a lot has changed and been developed, the first PC made was the Xerox NoteTaker in 1978 and only 10 prototypes were made. It didn't have a HD display, it had a 128Kb RAM and 5MHz Intel processor, not 5GHz. Modern day PCs have a lot more than that and even Smartphones are better than the Xerox NoteTaker.

Back in the 20th Century the internet was used by the military and governments to share intelligence (information), then though the years it was made available to the public, back then there was no; CSS (used in html for altering the font), streaming videos/music and spectacular UI. Also 20Mbs of data was a vast amount, whiles we have 32Gb (over 1000x the amount) USB drives.

The internet really started when Web2.0 (first used in 1999) was introduced, it wasn't a new piece of software or update, but where CSS, sending text, folksonomy (tagging), subscription services and crowdsourcing was possible and more things were introduced, most importantly javascript and social networking websites.

Since then IT has been used to connect people more and help toward goals, it is used in a variety of places, from organizing your schedule to databases for banks. It also helps us be more social and connect to friends/family and also help us to connect to acquaintances from ages ago. I went to North Grecian Street Primary School and had a few friends, but did not have any social accounts, a few years ago I joined a page for the school and last year i found more than 10 of my friends from that school. It helps friends reconnect and find lost family members every day, then lets you chat with them or video call them and share memory's. I also use Twitter (added in the about tab to the right by editing the html) to find out information, keep updated on events and win prizes, i won Section 8 Prejudiced from @4JStudios for something I did on Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition, also I feel companies are more social with their customers/users on Twitter.
